About Kumar Lama
Kumar Lama is a master artist of classical Tibetan scroll painting or thangka. Traditionally mounted in brocade and hung on walls of temples or prayer rooms, thangkas depict the vast pantheon of Buddhist religious iconography and are an essential part of the ritual arts and meditative practices of Vajrayana Buddhism.
Kumar Lama
Kumar Lama began his training at age nine as a child prodigy. After completing his classical training and traditional apprenticeships, he established himself firmly as a master artist by exhibiting his work in Nepal and Europe, opening an art school in Kathmandu and painting wall murals in three monasteries in Nepal. In 1991, The Ethnographic Museum of the University of Zurich commissioned Kumar to paint the Kalachakra mandala as part of their permanent collection. Kumar currently resides in Santa Cruz, California where he teaches and exhibits his work.
